South Padre Island is located on the Gulf of Mexico in Texas. It is the longest barrier island in the world and is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and the Laguna Madre Bay. It is connected to the Texan mainland by the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway, an impressive two and a half mile long bridge which sweeps up and across the bay. This is a location for sun-loving visitors; the climate is sub-tropical bringing mild winters and warm breezy summers and enjoying the great outdoors is key to making the most of a trip to the island. Many visitors to South Padre arrive purely to sit back and relax. The beaches are stunning and the water of the Gulf of Mexico is warm and welcoming. For those who want to do more there is plenty on offer. Energetic holiday makers can go windsurfing, parasailing, water skiing or surfing. Becoming one with ocean waves and blue skies and getting away from it all by letting off some high energy steam. There is snorkeling and diving available. And for those who prefer to stay on dry land horseback riding along the beach can be exhilarating. There is a lush green golf course on the island too.

Boats trips out from the island to explore the Gulf of Mexico can be made with services for boat hire available from many hotels. Once on the water, visitors can try their hand at some fishing too and in some restaurants or places to stay with self catering facilities it is possible to cook your catch and enjoy it for supper.

Nature is shown a great deal of respect on South Padre. Ecotourism is thriving and the unspoiled nature of the island can be enjoyed on dolphin boat trips, or on excursions to see the sea turtles which nest on the South Padre beaches. Guides give informative talks on the turtles and visitors can watch the amazing creatures feed and possibly see young turtles that have just hatched head for the water. There is also the Dolphin Research and Sea Life Center where visitors can get hands on experience of these animals. Another very popular activity in South Padre is bird watching. With over 300 species of bird on the island it is a paradise for birders one of the best places in the western hemisphere.

Port Isabel is on the Texan mainland and is the point at which the causeway links the mainland to the island. Historically it was a fishing village and it is home to the Port Isabel Lighthouse which lies in the Historical State Park and is open to visitors. It was restored in 2000 and views from the top are spectacular.

When you are choosing hotels South Padre has a range to choose from. Ocean views from balconies overlooking the sea ideal for watching the breathtaking sunsets, restaurants on terraces, some rooms even have their own private deck with the opportunity to hire a boat for exploring the waters of the bay. Rooms frequently have self catering facilities for times when you want to get back to the hotel, eat in and relax. The only rule when staying on South Padre is that there is no place for the rat race so it is no surprise to find hotels with swimming pools, Jacuzzis, spas and direct access to the beautiful sandy beaches.

Business visitors can come to the innovative convention center, a wonderful location for conferences and meeting, which can hold up to 2,500 people. As for accommodating guests, within the immediate vicinity there are a number of hotels South Padre is a perfect tropical location in which to carry out business.

Being situated so close to the Mexican border, just 30 miles away, South Padre is an excellent place to eat authentic Mexican cuisine and there are a number of great seafood restaurants. At night clubs and bars open and the lively nightlife begins.
